Chapter 10

Shortly after the words left Travis’s lips, a long convertible came swinging into the parking lot, music blaring from it that Blake hadn’t heard since he was in high school. Caryn and Bev were sitting in the front seat, and Caryn took a long moment to fix her hair before getting out and gesturing for Bev to follow her inside.

“Oh, hey guys,” Caryn said, when she and Bev got close enough. “That is so nice of you two to stand out here and welcome everyone in! You know what, I should join you. I was Prom queen our senior year, I think more people will recognize me, you know? They’ll really know they’re in the right place.”

Blake opened his mouth to protest, but Caryn didn’t pay him any mind, spinning around and addressing Bev, who was standing meekly behind her. The difference between the two women was striking. Caryn, who was outspoken and stubborn, was wearing a red, off the shoulder dress that accentuated her curves and her tanned skin. The Arizona sun shone on her ginger-blonde hair, which was twisted into a casual but elegant bun, a few tendrils escaping in front of her face.

Bev, on the other hand, was wearing a white blouse and simple black pants, combined with flats and an unassuming haircut, her blonde hair falling straight and simply above her shoulders. Even her face was plain and ordinary, nothing special to look at, no makeup or particular expression.

The two were night and day, and Blake couldn’t help but wondering why they spent time together. He wondered if Caryn drove the relationship and demanded her presence, or if Bev liked her and stuck around because she was loyal. He suspected it may be a combination of reasons. Deep down, he really didn’t care why they were friends.

“Go on inside,” Caryn said, waving her hand at Bev the way someone might wave at a fly that was bothering them. “Find us a table. I’ll stay out here.”

“But I don’t really know anybody here…” Bev’s voice trailed off when she realized Caryn had stopped listening to her and had instead stepped up next to Blake, as though the two of them were there together.

“Hello! Katie! Over here!” she said, waving and running to hug a woman who had come walking up the sidewalk on her own. “Oh my gosh, it’s so amazing to see you here! Go right through these doors. Find a seat, yes. Talk to you in a bit!”

Katie nodded to both Blake and Travis, who hadn’t gotten a chance to say anything to the woman before she disappeared. Blake sent Travis a look and he shrugged. If Caryn was going to do all the work for them, why not let her?

“Okay, then…” Bev said, putting her head down and sulking into the school, glancing back once as though she was wondering if Caryn might change her mind and come with her. Blake felt bad for her, but didn’t say anything, more distracted by his annoyance at the fact that Caryn had already insinuated herself into the next hour of his life.
